LEROY WAN (LEADER LOVEBOT) on “Leroy and The Lovebots: EP”
DEAR BABIES,
It’s Mama Leroy here! AND I’M HAVING A FUCKING BABY!!!
It took Leroy and The Lovebots months and months of gruelling sweaty studio time (with the help of fellow Lovebots Andrew Heebeejeebee and Jasmine Harvey), but once we started having sex in the studio, we made eargasm after eargasm, and now, our baby is being birthed!!!
But this baby, I want to be able to strut in heels down the catwalk before ze is revealed to you. Ze’s just walking right now, but when the Louboutin’s go on, I’ll let you know.
So far, due date is my birthday: November 26th 2011
The album is the electic mix of all our styles and all our backgrounds. It says who we are and where we come from. It’s an homage to the 60’s “The Smiths”. It has the swagger and almost surreal style of “Janelle Monae” and “Florence and The Machine”. Mixed with the youth of “The Moldy Peaches”.
We like to think of it as if we took all those summers, where we had one too many tequila shots on the beach, next to the bonfire. You made out with that perfectly impossible guy but then realized he was always that giant greasy douchebag that you knew he was; so you stumble back home with your best girlfriends in your thankfully modest stilettos. But all of those irreplaceable, honest and teenage moments, concentrated into 5 songs, one EP.
”LEROY AND THE LOVEBOTS: EP” Tracklist:
1. A Thing I’ll Never Get Over
LW: “A THING I’LL NEVER GET OVER is a song I wrote about the science of that person, that reason, though no matter how incompatible you are personality wise, sometimes chemistry conquers all.
It’s a rock anthem, with a wailing electric. It’s powerful. I let my inner Alice Cooper out on this one. I love David Bowie and Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger, so my performance on this song is dedicated to their emotion. Their energy. So to capture all the levels and the progression of the song, we did take after take after take until we got the perfect all-in-one take.”
2. Jim Carrey
LW: “JIM CARREY is a song about how I want to fuck the brains out of an actor named Jim Carrey. It’s our catchy addictive radio friendly song. BUT! We wanted to pull a ‘M. Night Shamaylan’, you know, we want a twist. So the lyrics of the song, are, unapologetic. For example, I sing ‘I want to see your Bruce Almighty that lives in your tighty whities.’ Because I’m honest. It’s an honest song.
And once you go black swan. You NEVER go back swan.”
3. Playing Parts in Movies
LW: “This is my Prom song. This is a song I wrote about one of my favourite movies: “Clueless”.
I’ve always loved 80’s and 90’s romantic comedies because of the fantasy in them. The fantasy the movie creates is so tangible yet so fantastic, that it makes you think it could be real. Like that crazy house party at that cool cheerleader’s parents mansion, or that slowed down airport scream accompanied by multiple epiphanies that drove the man of your dreams to dash to the airport to find you.
So since I’m a 20 year old cynical bitter cat lady, I’ve really learned to appreciate these fantasies and thought nothing would be better than to write that soundtrack song that always brings the rom-com all together. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” would be nothing without “Moon River”. So this song has another purpose too, to find a movie soulmate to be the soundtrack for.
This song is basically me, in song form. We’re both looking for ‘the real thing’. Forever in the purgatory of hope and hopelessness. But also, it’s about switching the traditional roles of the rom-com around.
‘Wouldn’t it be easy, if we were playing parts in movies.
Wouldn’t it be fun? I’ll be Alicia Silverstone and you’re Paul Rudd.
Isn’t this what you want?’ “
4. I’m All Smiles
LW: “This song is dedicated to my loneliness. This song is for those mornings, when you wake up in someone else’s bathtub alone after that house party and you ask yourself, is that the place where you want to be? It’s for those nights of solitude where you have everyone but you feel like you have no one. And the only way to feel better is to embrace your solitude. Embrace the pain and say ’I’m all smiles’.”
5. Leroy and The Lovebots
LW: “FOR YEARS and YEARS I have tried to write that single. I want my “Just Dance”. my “Umbrella”, my “Hollaback Girl”, my “Hips Don’t Lie”.
I wanted that song that was so addictive lyrically and melodically, that I was confident enough to say, this is my title track. This is my single. This is the song everyone will know is for. This is the song that will change my life.
And I was so frustrated because I was trying so hard, and I wasn’t constipated. It was just, all this forced song writing made me write so much shit! This song was crap, that song was crap.
Then, during late summer, we went back in the studio and this song just fell out of my brain, onto my lap. I had the lyrics down a while ago, but the melody just fluttered by, into my mind, and out of my mouth. Very organically. Naturally.
It’s this breath of fresh air. It’s the one song where out of this EP, if we make it big, this would be the staple of our style. Our definitive. This is LEROY AND THE LOVEBOTS.”
